Ingredients:

  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 2 tsp baking soda
  • 2/3 cup shortening
  • 1 cup light brown sugar firmly packed
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tsp vanilla or 1 tsp vanilla and 1 tsp almond flavoring
  • 2-3/4 cups sifted all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup Prairie Farms Buttermilk

Directions:

  • Add soda to boiling water; set aside to cool.
  • Cream shortening; add sugars and continue to cream. Add eggs and beat well; add vanilla.
  • Sift together dry ingredients; add to creamed mixture alternately with buttermilk.
  • Add water and soda mixture.
  • Pour into greased, lightly floured pans.
  • Bake for 25-30 minutes at 350 °F.
